This school was a landmark for the McDuffie community, and its replacement needed to be designed and built with a 20th century look, but 21st century performance. This 64,000 SF building was designed by James W. Buckley & Associates. The challenge was to design and construct this building for less than $120/SF. The team met this challenge. The major construction challenge on this project was the site. The new R. L. Norris Elementary School sits on the very edge of a watershed and wetlands. The expansive piece of property was also cut in half by power lines. With careful preparation, Parrish was able to ready the site for the new school. Retaining walls, extra storm drainage, and a raised elevation for the front entrance, building pad and rear bus loop makes R. L. Norris Elementary School a very user-friendly, easily accessible school.
